To say that public schools do not allow principals in teachers classrooms is silly and simply untrue. Classrooms are paid for with public money and open to the public, including the principal. Teachers have open door policies and welcome their principals, parents, and fellow teachers into the classrooms. Since Mr. Gates wants the digital age of taping to be available in all classrooms everywhere, maybe he could arrange for this funding? My children's HS roof leaks. They certainly do not have the technology to tape record and make DVD's weekly. They do have high quality public school teachers and are college bound. It would seem that Mr. Gates should be able to make positive education comments without bashing public school teachers.
Bill is still thinking in the world of business -- that education is somehow a business. Testing and constant testing, putting cameras in classrooms (which is more Orwellian crap), and such things are negatives in the mix. Has Bill read John Taylor Gatto's book Underground History of American Education? Or Paulo Freire's book Pedagogy Of The Oppressed? Testing has actually been shown to lower learning -- it's the imposing of an arbitrary grid on organic human life. The main reason why good teachers become great, and the main reason all good teachers are good, is that they CARE. Most educational systems are based on an old Prussian military model -- the teacher, like a military general, speaks to the troops, who are the students. The students are fixed in their desks, can't speak without permission, can't even go to the bathroom without permission. So most educational systems are based on the idea of programming people to respond to authority. And to not think too much, or too critically. Because if you think a lot and question authority, rich and powerful people are more likely to be challenged in their wealth -- the whole power structure of society becomes challenged. So it's not only that great teachers care, it's also that they help students push beyond their oppression, to think outside of the box, etc. Education works best when there is a focus on these things: What's In The Box (received knowledge) The Fact That It Is A Box (critical thinking) What's Outside The Box (Positive Creative Action) = Education. But we tend to focus way too much on What's In The Box. Most education is weighted toward that, with every little emphasis or focus on the other 2/3 of the equation. Testing and cameras in the classroom is simply part of the old ways of thinking, and in fact continues the same bad ways of learning we need to move beyond.
I am continually inspired by a men of Bill Gates stature, who have realized that his life has a greater purpose. Through his philanthropic response to Malaria and the needy, he has shown that he lives a life that is beyond himself. Finally a life that has Purpose. Well done Bill! Thank your friend Justin for me. Great post.
He needs to make wireless electricity affordable and easy to get. That is what we need not better education or curing malaria in third world countries.
