Movie Spotlight: Seven Pounds

Will Smith's character Ben calls 911 to report a suicide. “Who’s the victim?” the operator asks. “I am,” the man replies, whereupon there’s nowhere to go but to a film-long flashback to reveal what’s gotten him to this point.

The movie seemed a little predictable but that aside it made me feel something heart wrenching and made me view Ben not as a saint like character, but somebody who was willing to give people a second chance.

My favorite part of the film was the introduction of Rosario Dawson's character Emily. Given Emily's vulnerability to Ben's being there for her during the hard times made is extremely hard to make the film flow nicely.

Ultimately we all know that Will Smith wants an Oscar after not winning for The Pursuit of Happyness. That much we understand. But if he thinks he can get one by playing a tragic character in a so-so movie he's likely mistaken.

Final Verdict: It's a clever one, all right, but it might actually be too clever for its own good. Don't take my word for it, go see it for yourself and tell me what you think.

  1. I agree with you that the movie is predictable. However I think the movie grabs you and does not let go until you are left to comprehend the selfless, yet egocentric decision by Ben. It leaves you both satisfied and yet disturbed.

  4. I absolutely loved it and hated it at the same time. I could not believe what he did but I wanted him to do it... If I had to give it stars it would be 2.5 out of 5...
